The three main species of Alaska Salmon are plentiful in the world famous Kenai River in varying degrees of abundance. The Kenai River is famed for its mammoth strain of Alaskan King Salmon (Chinook) and massive runs of Alaskan Reds (Sockeye) and the late arriving Alaskan Silvers (Coho). There is nothing else like it in the world when the Kenai River floods with its annual/seasonal migration of these Salmon. The King Salmon is the first to arrive to the river starting in May followed by the Reds in June and then the fighting Silvers in July. Each species are present for a certain time frame, usually lasting two to four months, depending on the species. These yearly migrations are referred to as “runs”. The Kings, Reds, and Silvers each make their ‘runs” in two separate time frames. For example; the Kings come into the Kenai first in May and June (early run), with the “late run” in July and August.
